It's been a while since I have had the time to post about art, design, and life. That s mostly because I have been totally caught up with art, design, and life. It's not always easy to write about what occupies your mind and body nearly 24/7. I had to oversee a kitchen remodel, I had a book to illustrate, and I had my own paintings to prepare for my first one person show in many years. When you are a full time illustrator, author, and designer, the opportunity to just make art for art's sake is a wonderful luxury and I thoroughly embraced it. I based many of my paintings on the Moleskin sketchbook I filled for the 2011 SKetchbook project. You can actually see the inspiration here.
Finally, I have art that is moving in a totally new direction. I gave my collection of antique dough boards to artist Richard Dunbrack (who is the genius behind my wonderful, art installation kitchen) and asked him to "embellish" the boards and create "frames." He did, and I then painted what the frames inspired. I absolutely loved this mixed media, mixed surface approach and am beginning to create more. Many more.
If you were unable to attend the opening last Satruday night, here is a short film created by my son David Hoon Newman, who is a documentary film maker and sound designer. Enjoy!
