Sometimes you see a piece of furniture and, like a painting or an antique, it speaks to you. I know all about this phenomenon. I have been hearing voices for years. My house is filled with stuff that not only spoke to me, but held long conversations and even waxed poetic.
The furniture designed by Rich Dunbrack is a voice that is always chattering away, loud and clear, in my head. This fact became apparent from the moment I laid eyes on the cupboard I wrote about in my very first post on this blog.
Here is Rich's cupboard, looking over the table.
From the initial introduction of first seeing his work in a shop, Rich's art furniture has captivated me. I love everything about it. If I could build furniture, this is the kind I would want to make: furniture that is like a free flowing sketch--fantastical and whimsical and something you can only imagine in your head--unless you happen to be Rich Dunbrack.
A couple of weeks ago Rich sent an email announcing a "studio clean out sale." The table above was pictured along with a number of other pieces, any one of which I also would have loved to buy. The issue was that I needed a new dining room table. And, lo and behold, this table was clearly THE ONE I needed. As you can see, our new family addition was meant for this space, in this house. Hallelujah!
The center circle is an old clock face from Prague.
The table legs are cut down from old columns. They probably held up a porch somewhere.
The colors of the table could not be better. There is a great deal of that very yellow and that slightly faded red/orange in the dining room and the adjacent family room. Elvis could see that immediately.
All the cookie jars gave the table a big thumbs up.
Then the old Wurlizter 71 juke box in the corner and the Cupie dolls in the showcase nodded in agreement.
And the best part of all? My husband agrees wholeheartedly with Elvis, the cookie jars, the Juke box and the Cupie dolls. Welcome, Table! Now you're home free!
